If you are considering putting together a corporate website, ask yourself one important question - why? The trouble is that too many companies and organizations decide to have a business presence on the web for the wrong reason. Often this wrong reason is simply that other companies have a website, and today it is expected for a business to have one.

Thinking along these lines is likely to result in a vague website with no real focus, and no real benefit to consumers, clients or potential customers. Having a poorly designed corporate website without any real focus is often worse than having no website at all. Before internet technology most businesses would provide business cards or other documentation which would provide a telephone number of or customers to use if they had any questions or interest.

Today companies dish out their website addresses in the same way - but often making the disastrous mistake of assuming that a website address has taken the place of the phone number, or at least acts as a supplementary point of contact. To think along these lines is to miss the point entirely.

A corporate website should not primarily be a telephone supplementary, or a page displaying the address and phone number of the company. This reduces the website to merely an expensive business card, and is unlikely to be visited by many clients in future. A corporate website is a chance to reach those people you often miss in other ways, to communicate ideas in ways which wouldn’t be possible over the phone or in person, and to provide services that go beyond being a poorly developed business card.
