Why are Fad Diets bad?

Fad diets are diets designed to be followed for only a short period of time.  The term has also come to mean any diet that explodes into national or international fame, only to plummet into obscurity. Fad diets are sometimes known as food fad-ism. A food fad is a phenomenon in which some food or category of food suddenly becomes very popular. These generally have some common elements, including:

-    The food, or some ingredient within it, is thought to have amazing powers.
-    Some foods must be avoided because they have equally amazing powers, but that do bad things.

One of these fad diets that has these elements is the Atkins diet. Carbohydrates are avoided like the plague, because a carbohydrate low diet can do amazing things for your body. Carbohydrates take on both of the common elements in that removing carbohydrates from the diet creates a near magical metabolic state in which fat is burned at an incredible rate.  This diet even included short phases, followed by sustained phases. But Dr. Atkins did intend that people could eat this way for the rest of their lives.

As with many have diets, Atkins popularity was extreme and short-lived. For a number of years the Atkins diet was everywhere, and everyone seemed to be following it .  Entertainment magazines were full of movie stars and music stars and sports stars who claimed amazing weight loss and fitness all due to the Atkins diet. Although still around today, the diet is far from as popular as it was at its height.

Many fad diets can be quite dangerous.  Even a diet like the Subway diet, as first presented in the commercials, could have problems. At its center was a young man named Jared who had lost hundreds of pounds in only a year by eating Subway sandwiches. But Jared had made a radical shift in his caloric habits.  That could have killed him. The diet did include many positive aspects such as exercise, like walking. Let’s talk about workouts. Be careful when taking on some of these fad diets. A healthy combination of reasonable diet and exercise in the long-term can help you lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
